When I first began yoga, I was about 70 pounds overweight. Let’s just say I wasn’t a fan of Chaturanga, and Side Plank just wasn’t going to happen. I felt every single ounce of my weight every time I had to push it up and lower it down. I would look around me at the other people in the room who seemed to be flowing effortlessly and gracefully into poses…and I wasn’t. Over the past few months, I’ve lost 30 pounds with first Jenny Craig and then Weight Watchers, and the poses have become much easier.
Yoga is excellent for relieving stress, so if you are a stress eater you may find you eat less while practicing yoga.
The bottom line is if you combine your yoga practice with a good weight loss regimen then you will see very good results. Don’t wait until you lose weight to begin yoga. Start anyway. If it’s difficult now, it will just get easier and easier as you shed the pounds. You will become very strong. I can tell you that from experience. Yoga is life-changing. Start today. You will be glad you did.
